Fishing regulations
The fishing licence is only valid along with the national licence, ID and a proof of disinfection. Bought licences will not be refunded. Only hand-held rod fishing is permitted, and only one active rod per person is allowed. Selling and/or transferring licenses to another person is not permitted.
DISINFECTION
Fishing equipment that has been used outside Finnmark county must be sterilised before a fishing license can be purchased. A sterilisation receipt from rivers in North-Varanger are accepted, however receipts older than 7 days prior to purchasing the fishing licence will not be accepted.
FISHING PERIOD
- Salmon: from 22nd June 18:00 until 31st August 23:59.
- ALL Female salmon are Protected, and shall immediately be returned to the watercourse.
- Sea trout & Sea Char are protected, and shall immideately be returned to the watercourse.
FISHING ZONES
- Zone 1 – from restricted area below bridge to Fallstadholmen
- Zone 2 – from Fallstadholmen to upper restricted area.
One can only buy one zone each day and maximum three days in a row.
RESTRICTED ZONES
- Entire season: From the sign downstream of “Brukulpen” and down to the sea. From sign 600 meters on the upper side of Telebu and up to the end of the watercourse.
- NB! Any part of the river may be restricted or protected during the season, depending on the amount of salmon in the river. Look for marking and info on the bulletin board at” Brukulpen” and on Facebook.
FISHING EQUIPMENT
- Whole season: Fly fishing and bait fishing with worms, without sinking. ONLY FLOATING lines or bulbs are allowed.
- NB! It is prohibited to fish upstream (does not apply to dry fly or worm fishing) or in such a way that the fish can be foul-hooked.
- Flies with sinkers are not permitted. The Francis tube fly is not permitted - only small Francis tied on a single, double or triple hook is permitted. Hooks bigger than size 2 single, size 4 double and triple are not allowed.
FISH THAT MUST BE RELEASED BACK INTO THE RIVER
- Whole season: Kelts, salmon shorter than 35 cm. All sea trout and sea char.
- All female salmon. If in doubt, let the fish survive. Remember that the fish should be handled gently and immediately put back into the watercourse
QUOTA
Season quota:
- Citizens of Vardø municipality: 8 salmon
- Citizens of Finnmark county: 6 salmon
- Citizens outside of Finnmark: 4 salmon
Day quota:
- 2 salmon per fisherman. When quota is full, fishing must stop for the remains of the fishing time.
- Fishing time depends on type of license (see fishing license for details).
CATCH REPORT
- Registering of catch has to be done immediately after catching each fish. This is done digitally on www.natureit.no or on the Natureit app. The app must be downloaded, and log-in information is the same as the log in you use when buying the licence.
- Anglers who have a licence and do not hand in their record at the end of the season will not be permitted to purchase a license the following season.
ETIQUETTE
- Respect your fellow anglers. Please fish with the flow of the river. Vardø Sportsfisker og Jegerforening encourages all fishermen to release all large salmon caught, as to allow them to spawn. Please inform the river regulators of any irregularities you observe.
- Violation of regulations set by tenants can lead to a fee and exclusion from fishing and police reporting will be rank. Violations of public rules will be reported to the police.
- These regulations are based on regulations agreed on by the county of Finnmark regarding salmon fishing and river fishing within the county boundaries act 2008-2024.
